An 18-year-old Nebraska woman who used abortion pills to terminate her pregnancy early in her third trimester was sentenced to 90 days in jail and two years probation after pleading guilty to “illegal concealment of human remains.”
The teenager, Celeste Burgess, and her mother, Jessica Burgess, 42, were charged after police obtained their private Facebook messages, which showed the mother and daughter discussing plans to terminate the pregnancy and “burn the evidence”.
Investigators said the mother had ordered abortion pills online and given them to her daughter in April 2022, when Celeste was 17 and in the beginning of her third trimester. The two would later bury the remains of the fetus, police said.
“The court finds probation appropriate but deems imprisonment necessary given the seriousness of the offense and the failure to comply with the law,” the judge explained.
In Republican-led Nebraska, it was recently introduced the ban on abortions after the twelfth week.
