Alarm on the Space Station: according to what was stated by the media and the competent authorities, Wednesday 14 December was A major refrigerant leak has been detected on the Russian Soyuz MS-22 spacecraft, which is currently docked with the ISS.
The Russian astronauts were supposed to conduct an extravehicular activity – also unofficially called a “spacewalk” – but it has obviously been postponed. As you can see by clicking herethe cameras outside the orbiting laboratory are showing a constant flow of frozen coolant projected into space.
“According to preliminary information, on Thursday, December 15, the outer skin of the instrument and assembly compartment of the Soyuz MS-22 manned spacecraft was damaged‘, Roscosmos said on Dec. 15, but the crew aboard the space station remain safe.’A visual inspection confirmed the leak, after which it was decided to abort planned extravehicular activities by crew members of the Russian segment of the ISS.“
It is unclear how the loss of and damage to the Soyuz spacecraft will affect the expected March 2023 return of the MS-22 crew, but what we currently know is that NASA and Roscosmos are working together to try to understand the origin of the leak and implement all countermeasures to fix the situation!
