Net of the Amazon technology for payments with the palm, there are other news related to the e-commerce giant. Indeed, the latter has announced that there is a will to ditch the padded plastic bags with regard to product shipments.
In this regard, as also reported by The Vergethe goal is to gradually reduce packaging wasteas well as directly explained also in a Amazon Sustainability Report published in July 2023. In the latter, in fact, Andy Jassy’s company explains: “We are phasing out padded bags containing plastic in favor of recyclable alternatives“.
The news comes at a time when data indicates that only less than 10% of plastic waste globally is recycled. In short, it is a not insignificant environmental problem, which is pushing Amazon to take a stand on plastic packaging. This is also because plastic bags are not usually accepted in a large number of recycling programmes.
It must be said that there is currently no hard deadline, therefore it is not clear by when Amazon intends to make this progressive step. However, there is optimism: Matt Littlejohn, senior vice president of ocean conservation organization Oceana, explained, while noting that he would like to see more commitments, that “if Amazon moves forward, that’s good news for the oceans“.
