For the past two months Apple has rolled out just as many firmware updates for its AirTags, but had not previously provided any information on the new features introduced. Fortunately, however, today the official changelog has arrived in which the changes are exposed.
L’firmware update 2.0.24 allows AirTag owners to use the Precision Location system to locate unknown AirTags not linked to their Apple ID with the iPhone. The same update also introduced a notification that appears when an AirTag that has been separated from its owner is nearby, but a sound has also been introduced to make it easier to locate. Apple has explained that these innovations will prevent cases of stalking and inappropriate use of the AirTag if the speaker has been tampered with.
With the’update 2.0.36 however, an issue with the AirTag’s accelerometer not activating in certain scenarios has been fixed. All the news in question require iOS 16.2 and later versions, while for Precision Finding it is only compatible with iPhone 11 or later models.
The AirTag is updated automatically when the tracker is in the vicinity of an iPhone connected to the internet. Unfortunately, Apple does not allow you to force it through the Find My application or through other procedures.
