
At least 20 people have died in the aftermath of a fire in a rest home in Kemerovo, Russia’s southwestern Siberia. Six other people were injured. It is still not entirely clear how the fire started, but according to the first information provided by Russian officials it could have been caused by a malfunctioning boiler. It also caused great damage because the building of the retirement home was made of wood. Firefighters put out the blaze in the early hours of Saturday.
The Russian news agency tax He wrote that the rest home was operating illegally, and that according to fire officials across Russia there are several similar unregistered facilities: since they are considered private property, they are not subject to normal fire and safety checks.
