One of the British public broadcaster’s reporters on Sunday BBC who is in China, Edward Lawrence, was arrested while recounting the outstanding protests against the so-called “zero COVID” strategy in Shanghai. Lawrence said he was beaten by police before being arrested, and was only released several hours later.
“We have had no official explanation or apology from the Chinese authorities, beyond a claim by the officials who later released him that they arrested him for his own good, to prevent him from catching Covid from crowd”, he said BBC. Shanghai is the largest of the demonstrations being held in China these days.
