Incredible video from the front of the war. In an unspecified location, a bomb explodes in the trench: we see a Ukrainian soldier who miraculously remains alive: the hiss and then the explosion with the cloud of dust, the soldier miraculously remains unscathed and smiles.
From Kiev’s social networks, the video went viral: the young soldier peers from the hole in the ground, then the flash and the rescue, while probably being filmed on a cell phone by a fellow soldier.
Yesterday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky visited the troops in the eastern region of Donetsk, which Russia claims as its own after a controversial referendum. The area – particularly around the city of Bakhmut – is now the main target of fighting after Ukrainian forces retook Kherson in the south last month. Zelensky called it “the most difficult area that protects not only the east, but our entire state.”
Both sides are thought to have suffered heavy casualties in the area, as also reported by British intelligence reports: the battle for Bakhmut has been compared to fighting during World War I due to the trenches, charred trees and mud that they have become a feature of the landscape.
