Anthony Lowe, a 36-year-old African American, both legs amputated, was killed last Thursday by the Los Angeles police while trying to escape. He was holding a long-bladed knife.
A grainy video, taken from a cell phone and released on Saturday, shows Lowe – who appears to have just climbed out of a wheelchair – attempting to escape on severed legs. The Huntington Park Sheriff’s Department obtained video of Lowe’s shooting from cameras at a nearby business, but does not intend to release the recording until the investigation is clearer. The officers, meanwhile, have been suspended from duty.
The new case of police violence explodes on the day of the funeral in Memphis of Tire Nichols: 29 years old, African American, beaten and killed by the police during his arrest for an alleged traffic offence. “He died from an act of violence committed by those who are supposed to keep us safe,” US Vice President Kamala Harris said during the ceremony.
