Over 9 million views at the time of writing: these are the impressive numbers recorded by StreamerBans tweets announcing the PewDiePie banned from Twitch. Yes, you got it right: the Web star was banned from the popular purple portal.
What was published on May 9, 2023 by the aforementioned automated Twitter profile, which keeps track of what happens on the Amazon-owned platform, has certainly not gone unnoticed on the Web, as you can well imagine. In fact, there are many who wonder what it was the cause behind the ban of a character so familiar to the public.
The curiosity around the story has also been fueled by the fact that PewDiePie hasn’t done “official streams” on Twitch for years, which has led a good number of people to wonder if it is actually possible to ban the YouTuber without him ever physically appearing live in this period of time. In this context, sources such as GameRant And PC Gamer they therefore investigated the matter, trying to better understand what happened.
Well, at the center of the ban of Felix Kjellberg’s Twitch channel (this is PewDiePie’s real name), which before March 2023 had been on hold for about two years but had over 1.5 million followers, there would be a strange live aired on March 21, 2023. Apparently, the well-known YouTuber was not seen in the latter, but episodes of the sitcom Trailer Park Boys.
Initially the community thought of a hack of the profile, but it seems that these rumors have been denied (a bit to everyone’s surprise), also considering the fact that later on the channel old videos related to PewDiePie started appearing in loops (in a live stream entitled “PewDiePie Infinity “). The whole thing would actually have been an experiment by CoPilot Media, a distribution and monetization service that also owns the rights to the aforementioned sitcom, to test the subsequent transmission of old YouTube videos.
Net of this, for a few hours the PewDiePie’s Twitch channel turns out to be inaccessible. On the other hand, trying to connect to the latter at the time of writing, we read: “The channel is temporarily unavailable for a violation of the Community Guidelines or the Twitch Terms of Service“.
The reasons are not yet fully understood of the ban, but the community is expressing theories on the fact that everything could be due to what PewDiePie did in the past (in 2017 the YouTuber ended up at the center of widespread controversy due to controversial words pronounced in gameplay) or to the fact that sending broadcasting YouTube videos on Twitch may have somehow violated the latter platform’s guidelines (considering the difference in content management between the two services). For now PewDiePie has not officially commented on the story, but the latter has certainly not gone unnoticed.
