It is not the first time that Chinese spy balloons have been sighted over US territory: in the past these sophisticated balloons, which are equipped with on-board guidance systems, flew over Hawaii and Guam, according to US intelligence sources. At the moment, the balloon continues to fly over American territory, according to US military sources who ensure that NORAD, the aerospace defense command of North America, continues to monitor its trajectory, not revealing where it actually is.
Regarding its intelligence gathering activity, Pentagon spokesman Brigadier General Patrick Ryder assured that “once the balloon was identified, the government immediately took action to prevent the collection of sensitive information”. And he then confirmed that similar activities have been observed “for several years”.
