Prosecutors stated that Pedro Castillo is under arrest on suspicion of having attempted to usurp power in violation of the Constitution. And now the Peruvian Parliament could positively evaluate the proposal which plans to bring forward to 2023 the elections of the president and Congress originally scheduled for 2026, a proposal supported by Dina Boluarte (The vice president who took over from Castillo). Meanwhile, the family of the deposed president has obtained asylum from Mexico and is in the Mexican embassy in Lima awaiting permission to travel abroad. This was reported by the Mexican Foreign Minister, Marcelo Ebrard.
Peru is going through a political crisis that began last December 7, when President Pedro Castillo tried to dissolve Parliament before the impeachment vote that concerned him. Arrested, protests began calling for Boluarte to resign and to set early general elections to replace her and all members of Congress. The balance of the clashes in the demonstrations is currently at least 27 dead.
