It’s a bit like Times Square in New York for New Year’s Eve: the Shibuya crossing square in Tokyo has become famous all over the world for its Halloween celebrations which this year last even 5 days, from Friday 28 October until Tuesday November 1st. There is no organizer for the event; is an unregulated gathering of Halloween lovers populated by an array of costumes of all kinds, from the creepy to the hilarious, closer to our carnival than to the way Halloween is celebrated in the Anglo-American tradition. The watchword is to have fun.
This year the authorities, also following the massacre that took place in Seoul just two days ago, have tried to avoid problems with a large deployment of the police and by putting strict rules on alcohol, the consumption of which in public will be prohibited in Shibuya and in the Dogenzaka and Center Gai areas.
