Boris Johnson rants at then-Prince Charles who called the then prime minister’s plan to deport migrants crossing the Channel to Rwanda as “shocking”. In an interview with Lbc, Guto Harri, who was then director of communications for Johnson, reveals, just a few days after the coronation of King Charles, the tough confrontation between Bojo and the future monarch.
“The impression I had is that the prince Carlo was embarrassedtrying to deny that he had said those things”, said Harri, referring to the exchange that took place between the two in June 2022, during the Commonwealth summit which took place in Rwanda.
Noting that if “he hadn’t said these things” the royal entourage would have had to block or deny the media, Johnson “got down hard” with Prince Charles – Harri said again, claiming to tell what the premier told him then – ” confronting him on what he, an unelected royal, had said about the actions of a democratically elected government.”
Johnson, who like all the other former premiers was one of the guests of King Charles’s coronation last Saturday at Westminster Abbey, then described the conversation he had with Prince Charles on the sidelines of the summit “a good chat”. And now he disputes the veracity of the reconstruction of his former collaborator.
“Boris Johnson does not recognize this reconstruction which is inaccurate and does not reflect any conversation” explained a source close to the conservative leader, later criticizing the choice to report contents of conversations with real people. “We will never comment on these issues and Johnson deplores any attempt to do so “, it concludes.
