The German football federation will begin legal action against football’s governing body FIFA following the ban on the captains of seven European national teams wearing the armbands with the rainbow logo from the ‘One Love’ anti-discrimination campaign typically at the World Cup in Qatar. Germany is one of the national teams that have renounced making their captains wear armbands to avoid bookings and possible exclusions from matches, as required in these cases by the international FIFA regulations.
Among the reasons that prompted the German federation to initiate legal action is also the fact that, following the press release, the REWE supermarket chain had withdrawn its sponsorship in protest. «FIFA prevented us from using a symbol of inclusion and human rights – he said a spokesman for the national team – and the federation is keen to understand whether this behavior by FIFA is legitimate”.
Ahead of Wednesday’s match against Japan, German footballers also posed for the ritual photo on the pitch with one hand over their mouth in protest against FIFA’s recent decisions.
