He’s only twenty months old and yet he’s already become a hero. Casper, a young Pyrenean mountain dog, killed eight coyotes that were trying to prey on “his” sheep. It happened in Decatur, a small town in Georgia.
A pack of 11 coyotes attacked rancher John Wierwille’s herd. Casper furiously defended the sheep in a fight that lasted more than half an hour and knocked down eight coyotes who seriously injured him. The Pyrenean mountain dog was born as a guardian and not just of flocks. It is large and imposing, the male can reach even 80 kilograms, it is a dog that bonds closely with its human but at the same time is independent and self-confident.
Perhaps for this reason, after killing some of the assailants and driving away the others, Casper did not return home immediately. This prompted Wierwille to launch an appeal on social media to find him, he had found shreds of skin, blood and fur at the scene of the collision. Coyotes can be dangerous, when they hunt in packs they can really hurt. They belong to the same family of wolves, they are smaller and very agile, they have precise prey capture strategies and if hungry they also approach inhabited areas.
Returning to the brave dog, he returned home after two days, without a part of his skin and with his tail torn off. Usually coyotes to kill the prey when it is large in size jump on it and bite it to death. But that wasn’t the case with Casper, but he was still taken to the vets in critical condition. Doctors quickly stitched up a large wound on his neck and probably also avoided the skin graft. Now the dog is still scared and hesitant about everything, but there’s a good chance he’ll go back to what he used to be. In the meantime, a fundraiser for treatment has been opened which has raised more than 15,000 dollars.
It’s not uncommon to encounter coyotes in rural parts of the country and in the suburbs near woods and marshes, and the dogs don’t always do well. These animals also have a utility in the ecosystem, because they feed on mice and rabbits, limiting their proliferation. They hardly approach the man even if it is a few days ago the news that in Los Angeles one of them tried to drag away a two-year-old girl before the intervention of the father who chased him away.
