Nancy Pelosi in tears and happy for the approval of the Marraige Respect Act calls the bill “a glorious triumph of love and freedom.”
With 258 votes in favor and 169 against, US Congress passed new law protecting same-sex marriages across the country. After a long parliamentary process, the bill will now arrive on the president’s desk Biden who will sign it without delay after having supported it throughout the legislative process.
A decisive step in one ten-year battle for national recognition. The law requires all states to recognize same-sex marriages. The Respect for Marriage Act does not oblige states to to celebrate marriages between same-sex couples, but mandates that people be considered married in all states as long as the marriage is valid in the state where the marriage was performed.
In a statement following the vote, Biden called the legislation a “critical step to guarantee that Americans have the right to marry the one they love.” He said the legislation offers “hope and dignity to millions of young people across the country” who can grow up knowing their government will recognize and respect families of all “races , ethnicity or national origin.”The approval came after lengthy negotiationsto Chamber had given a first approval but the Senate he had delayed his decision until last month when a bipartisan amendment was passed that “calmed” some Republican party officials who feared it could undermine religious freedom
“We can silence the concerns of millions of loving couples who fear that an activist Supreme Court will one day take away their rights and freedoms,” the Senator said. Tammy Baldwin, the first openly gay person elected to the Senate. “We are giving to these couples fall in love with the assurance that their marriages are legal and that they will continue to have the same rights, responsibilities and benefits as any other married couple,” she added.
“We need it,” said the president of the Nancy Pelosi Room, who presided over the vote as one of his latest acts before stepping down in January. “It’s magic”. The bill is “a glorious triumph of love and freedom,” said speaker Pelosi, crying
