A woman and her four dogs were attacked by a Pit Bull in Maracalagonis, near Cagliari. There was no escape for two of the animals, while the owner, Marianna Panzarella, was rushed to the hospital, where she is still under observation. Following the episode, mayor Francesca Fadda said she was working to strengthen controls on compliance with the rules by pet owners, since “many reports had already been received in the past from citizens complaining of the presence of dogs owned without control on the streets of the country”.
The attack by the Pit Bull took place while the inhabitant of Maracalagonis was walking in the countryside around the Simbrizzi dam basin together with his four pets on a leash. The dog that attacked them appears to be owned, but at the time it was not controlled by anyone and, when he threw himself at the pets, the 46-year-old screamed and tried to oppose it, ending up being attacked in turn. For two of her four dogs, Roadster and Nikka, there was nothing they could do, while she, bitten in her right forearm, was urgently taken to the emergency room of the Santissima Trinità hospital in Cagliari. The carabinieri of the local station and of the mobile unit of the Compagnia di Quartu Sant’Elena intervened on the spot.

Marianna Panzarella is not in danger of life and the prognosis would be 30 days. “He’s not a stray,” the victim wrote on Facebook, referring to the Pit Bull that attacked her and her animals. He is kept fuller, more muscular and cleaner than my four combined, healthy…just unattended and alone. For now I won’t write anything else because I have no way, fingers and strength, but let it be clear that I also consider the dog that attacked me a victim of all this. I have lost a family for me and I won’t close my eyes or let it go. My dogs are dead.”
In the meantime, investigations are underway to identify the owner of the four-legged friend and Mayor Fadda promises more severity towards anyone who doesn’t bother to check their dogs. «I am already working to intervene in a more incisive way on compliance with some necessary rules, already established by national and regional laws, for the management and custody of dogs in order to safeguard the safety of all citizens, as well as respect for the environment and the hygienic-sanitary aspect and urban decorum – wrote Francesca Fadda on Facebook -. The measure will be a response to the numerous reports I have received from citizens complaining about dogs owned in the streets of the country without control. Therefore, I will entrust the Municipal Police and the environmental guards with total compliance with the ordinance, sanctioning the offenders street by street ».
