The choice of the United Nations to host the Cop 30in 2025 fell back on Belemin the state of Parain Brazil, in the Amazon area. This was announced by Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva from his Twitter profile. “It will be an honor for Brazil to receive representatives from all over the world in a state of our Amazonia. I am sure that Helder Barbalho (the state governor) and the people of Para are ready to promote the best COP in history”.
The United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP) is a major event that brings together leaders from all countries of the world to agree how step up global action in order to solve the climate crisis and review progress made on commitments made under theParis Agreement of 2015 which set the terms for trying to oppose the global warming.
The first United Nations Convention on Climate Changeheld right in Brazil, also known as Rio Accords, dates back to almost thirty years ago. It is an international environmental treaty produced by United Nations Conference on Environment and Developmentinformally known as the Earth Summit, held in Rio de Janeiro in 1992.
Since then the signatory countries of the convention – formally referred to as “set off” – they met every year for discuss progress and challenges (in 2020 the meeting did not take place due to the COVID-19 pandemic).
COP therefore means conference of the parties (“Cconference of the parties“) of the United Nations Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). COP 30 is the 30th meeting of the parties to the convention, and will be hosted by Brazil in Belem.
