In our test of Portal RTX, the new effort of RTX Remixes with path tracing, we have deliberately kept silent about one of the goodies developed by the green team for its fans, but the time has come to show you one.
The images come directly from 2kliksphilip, youtuber who recently released a video with all the secrets of the free update proposed by NVIDIA for the historic Valve title. You can recover the video at the bottom, but what hardware enthusiasts won’t want to miss is the possibility of unlock custom cubes to be used instead of the default aesthetic (however also reworked).
The cube we are talking about is the version “RTX extension“, which can be unlocked by discovering the secret code to be entered in the game menu. How? Simply by finding and framing his QR-Code within the game, but we won’t reveal anything else. Those who want to accept the challenge can look for it in game; those who, on the other hand, want to find out immediately what it is, can do so by running the video that you will find at the bottom.
What is so special about the “RTX” cube you can see in the pictures. It is a design directly inspired by that of video cards NVIDIA Founders Edition. The more curious will notice the presence of a double 16-pin 12VHPWR connector, therefore it is a “modified” version with power limit particularly pushed by the brand’s top-of-the-range video card, the RTX 4090.
We remember that Portal RTX assumes historical relevance for the medium and for the industry for two reasons in particular. The first concerns the implementation of the path tracing in real time. The second, however, is that of having demonstrated the extraordinary potential of RTX Remix, the NVIDIA Omniverse tool that you will surely have seen at work during the presentation of the new RTX 40 Series, intent on reconstructing the interiors of the office of Seyda Neen in TES3: Morrowind.
