The amendment was approved for amend article 10 of the Melandri Law concerning the extension of the duration of the contracts for the broadcasting of Serie A.
The Senate Budget Commission has given the green light to the amendment to the Quater Aid decree extends licenses from the current three to five years, in line with what happens abroad. The request had come several times from the exponents of the sports and football world, first of all some presidents of the Serie A teams, according to whom a choice of this type could attract more investments.
This novelty should enter the new tender, and comes just a few days before the green light for the new AGCOM guidelines on Serie A TV rights. The managing director Luigi De Siervo has explained in the past that the goal is to assign the rights TV for the next five years already by the end of the 2022/23 season, in order to allow broadcasters to prepare.
It should be emphasized that the amendment it does not provide for the extension of the contracts currently in force: this means that the composition of DAZN and Sky programming will remain this way until 2024. Therefore, the rule that the president of Lazio and senator of Forza Italia, Claudio Lotito, would have wanted was not approved.
