The agreement between the EU and smartphone manufacturers to implement the single USB-C charging connector finally has an effective date. As many will know, in fact, despite the Union having launched its new measures last June, the single charger will wait until 2024especially on Apple smartphones.
In particular, we now know that the deadline for the single connector it is December 28, 2024: After that date, no smartphone, tablet or other electronic product will be able to adopt a wired charging standard other than USB-C. The news comes from Official Journal of the European Union: since the European legislation was published today, December 8, 2022, it will enter into force in 20 days, therefore on December 28, 2022. Smartphone manufacturers will then have 24 months to comply with EU standardsso they will be able to wait until December 28, 2024 before complying with the new standard.
However, the date is in line with the expectations of many European politicians, who have always pushed for the implementation of the single connector between the fall and winter of 2024. In any case, it seems that the main ones player of the sector that do not yet use USB-C (i.e. Apple) will adapt to this standard long before the end of 2024: in fact, it seems that the iPhone 15 will already have a USB-C connector, saying goodbye to the traditional Apple Lightning port.
In addition to the Cupertino smartphones, however, all the tablets, digital cameras, headphones and portable game consoles are affected by European legislation, which therefore could also affect manufacturers of low-cost electronic devices, which sometimes remain anchored to rather antiquated charging systems. In 2026, however, the new standard will also be extended to laptops.
