The long tradition of beekeeping in Slovenia has become part of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by Unescoa decision taken by the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, during its session in Rabat in Morocco.
The application, entitled “Beekeeping in Slovenia, a way of life”, was coordinated by the Ministry of Culture. The ministry stated in a statement reported by the STA Agency that beekeeping is strongly rooted in the country and has also been developing in urban environments in recent years, as well as the related sectors of apitherapy and apitourism.
When the evaluation body of UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Committee gave its first nod of approval for the candidacy in early November, it said it had detected the links between intangible heritage and environmental sustainability. The sector represents a way of life for nearly 12,000 Slovenians and their families.
