In occasion of STEF 2022the annual event in which the Sony groups discuss new technologies, the Japanese giant has unveiled some technologies that aim to connect the virtual and physical environment and on which the research and development department is working.
CTO Hiroaki Kitano on the stage of the briefing wanted to highlight how the group’s goal is to “advance civilization and make the planet sustainable”, but also announced that the company will strengthen its research and development structure.
The technologies exhibited to the STEF2022 public are divided into various areas: digital processing, recreation of realistic experiences in both physical and virtual spaces, and technologies that capture what is happening in real space and use the captured data for entertainment and sustainability.
Starting fromdigital processingSony talked about an artificial intelligence and simulation technology capable of linking the physical and virtual worlds: the prime example is a surgical simulator, but there was also talk of the possibility of giving life to video and music through the artificial intelligence and the expansion of communication between people and robots.
As for the recreation of the physical world, from a PlayStation VR2 perspective, Sony talked about 3D Sensing technology and a new rendering system, as well as Hawk-Eye Innovations technology that allows you to create an even more realistic viewing experience for sports games. With Tenson Valve, however, Sony talks about an exclusive odor control technology, but also aims to reproduce remote space in a realistic way with high-quality 3D images and low-latency transmissions.
With the “ToF AR” software development kit, Sony also wants to propose a fluid representation of hand and finger movement in AR for VTuber. Still with regard to the capture of the physical world, the Earth Mimamori platform was unveiled which aims to prevent disasters and environmental damage to our country.
The Japanese company also wants to create a new type of entertainment through automatic shooting and streaming technology, mobile camera robots and virtual recording. All technologies are showcased on STEF2022 website.
