Argentina beat the Netherlands on penalties in the second quarter-final of the World Cup in Qatar and qualified for the semi-finals. Access to the final against Croatia will therefore be played on Tuesday 13 December, which eliminated Brazil in the afternoon.
In Lusail, Argentina took the lead after half an hour of play with Nahuel Molina following a decisive assist from Lionel Messi. In the second half, Messi himself scored the 2-0 penalty. However, around ten minutes from the ninetieth, the Netherlands got back into the game with a goal from Wout Weghorst, the striker who had entered the field shortly before. They then continued to attack and in added time were able to equalise, again with Weghorst, with a pattern from a free kick.
The game thus continued into extra time, where Argentina came close to scoring several times without being able to score. In the penalties, mistakes by Virgil van Dijk and Noa Lang were decisive, whose shots were saved by Argentine goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez.
