Lately on social media you may have read about the explosion – with consequent breakage – of the largest cylindrical aquarium in the worldlocated in the Radisson Blu luxury hotel, which led to the loss of hundreds of thousands of liters of water and 1,500 tropical fish (which could not resist the tragic event).
Most of the creatures that were inside of AquaDomthis is the name of the record-breaking aquarium, sadly died, despite officials trying to transport the creatures still in buckets.
In addition to the loss of so many animals, the tank explosion caused extensive damage inside the hotel, shattering the glass doors inside the building and causing large quantities of water to spill onto the street. Two unsuspecting passers-by were even injured from the tank glass that spilled out into the open.
The aquarium was a great feat of engineering. It was 25 meters tall and featured a built-in transparent lift that took guests to the second floor. Fish feeding and tank cleaning came performed daily by three or four professional diverswhile the entire construction cost about 12.8 million euros.
The explosion occurred in the early hours of dawn, at 5:45 on December 16, 2022, and in the bad luck it was a real stroke of luck: this because if the rupture had occurred during the day it would surely have caused many more injuries.
