The trail of fire in the night sky over southern Japan may have been caused by the wreckage of a Chinese rocket, Japanese authorities said today.
Videos began circulating on social media Wednesday night showing fireballs in the sky over Okinawa.
The Japan National Astronomical Observatory in Ishigaki reported seeing streaks of light at 8:33 pm, an official told France Presse news agency.
Nippon TV reached out to astronomy expert Fujii Daichi about the phenomenon. According to the expert, it is most likely the wreckage of the Chinese Long March 3B rocket, launched in November 2022; adding that the satellite deployment rocket had to re-enter the atmosphere at about the time the sightings occurred and along the predicted trajectory.
