Within hours of Twitter announcing the arrival of encrypted DMs, new details are arriving about this long-awaited feature that according to many it would bring the social network even closer to the app for everything Xwhich Elon Musk has spoken about on several occasions.
In a support document, the social network controlled by the CEO of SpaceX and Tesla explained what users can expect from the first version of this feature. Unlike what happens with Whatsapp, Facebook Messenger, Signal and iMessage in fact, for to access encryption you will need to pay a fee of subscription.
The Twitter document in fact, it highlights that encrypted DMs will only be available to verified users who then pay the fee for Twitter Blue, as well as verified organizations who pay the $1000 per month fee, or an affiliate of such an organization (who requires a $50/month subscription).
Obviously, both the sender and recipient will need to be using the latest version of the Twitter app. Encrypted DMs will still be highlighted by some indicators that will allow users to easily recognize them.
However, there are limitations: encrypted DMs can currently only be sent in individual conversations, but will soon be available in groups as well and only support text and links. Also, Twitter doesn’t guarantee protection against man-in-the-middle attacks, although engineers are working to limit them. The social also notes that while encrypted messages and reactions to DMs are encrypted, “the metadata (recipient, creation time, etc.) is not, and neither is the linked content (only the links themselves, not the content they refer to, are encrypted)“.
