Elon Musk has announced that starting next week, Twitter will provide a “general amnesty” to some suspended accounts. The decision came after the result of a poll launched on Wednesday asking Twitter users whether accounts that “hadn’t broken the law or engaged in blatant spam” should be reinstated on the social media platform. Several accounts, such as that of former US President Donald Trump, have already been reactivated.
Musk, considered the richest man in the world, bought Twitter for $44 billion last month. More than 3.1 million users of the social network responded to Musk’s poll, with 72.4% of them voting “Yes” for a general amnesty. “People have spoken. Amnesty starts next week,” Musk, who has 118.7 million followers on the platform, then tweeted, capping his tweet with the Latin expression “Vox populi, vox Dei.”
