Former NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen believes that the members of the Alliance “in a certain way” participate in the war in Ukraine, as they help it with weapons, but NATO as such is not part of the conflict and will not send troops there.
“NATO is not part of the war. But we shouldn’t hide that every single member of the Alliance is part of the war,” Rasmussen said during a discussion in the European Parliament’s Committee on Foreign Affairs and Defense. At the same time, the former NATO secretary general stressed that Ukraine has the right to defend itself and ask for help from its partners, therefore military aid from allies complies with international law according to the UN Charter.
“We should not be surprised that to a greater or lesser extent we are participating in this war to protect Ukraine. This is fully in line with international law,” he said, adding that he is personally for providing all necessary assistance to Kiev , because “peace with a dictator will not lead to peace, but to conflict and war.”
