The New York Times in the storm for publishing a crossword puzzle that some say is shaped like a swastika, among others on the day before the first night of Hanukkah. Among the comments on social networks that of Donald Trump Jr, who called it “disgusting”.
Numerous criticisms have also appeared on the newspaper’s website: “Who cares if it was ‘unintentional’? Isn’t that what publishers are for?” wrote one of the many users who asked the newspaper to intervene. In his public comment, the creator of the crossword was “excited” about the publication of his first Sunday puzzle in the NY Times, explaining that he gave it “a fun swirl shape”.
A spokesman for the newspaper assured that it is “a common crossword puzzle drawing: many open grids in crossword puzzles have a similar spiral pattern for rotational symmetry rules and black squares”. But his words weren’t enough to appease anger and suspicions.
