2022 was certainly characterized, in the tech field, by the return of Winamp: in fact, the historic music player is returned to the market last August with the 5.9 updatebut the news are not finished because another update arrives.
The new version of Winamp indeed includes support for music NFTs. As explained by the company in a press release sent to ArsTechnica, “latest version of Winamp allows music enthusiasts to connect their Metamask wallet via Brave, Chrome or Firefox to Winamp”. Now you can import music NFTs directly into the player, which it supports audio and video files distributed according to the ERC-721 and ERC-115 standards5, but “is extending this new feature to Ethereum and Polygon/Matic as well”.
Among the other innovations of version 5.9.1, announced directly by Winamp on its official Twitter account, there is also talk of optimizations that will make the app less heavy in terms of RAM consumption, as well as various improvements to security. Obviously, the advice is to proceed with the update in order to be able to enjoy all the new features, regardless of the use of NFTs.
Winamp was one of the most popular music players on the market in the late 90s and early 2000s, but its use has also gradually decreased due to the proliferation of streaming services such as Spotify and Apple Music.
